Powell and Spanos Earn All-New England First Team for Trinity Baseball Trinity College

Hartford, CT, June 2, 2000- Several Trinity College baseball players have been recognized for their outstanding seasons this spring with post-season accolades.

Senior first baseman/left-handed pitcher Brian Powell (Holyoke, MA) and sophomore second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, MA) were named to the 2000 American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) All-New England First Team. Powell, who made the squad as a utility player, batted a team-high .433 with 39 hits, 28 RBI, and 11 doubles, while posting a 4-0 record with a 1.74 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 31.0 innings on the mound. Spanos batted .404 with 32 runs, 42 hits, 29 RBI, and four homers, and made three errors in 144 chances at second base. Powell was also named to the 2000 New England Small College Athletic Conference All-NESCAC First Team and as the NESCAC Player of the Year for his outstanding season.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) and sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT) were selected to the All-New England Second Team. Bayliss, who was a First Team All-New England selection in 1999 and a Second Team All-New England pick in 1998, posted a 6-2 record with a 2.89 earned run average and 61 strikeouts in 53.0 innings this season. Freimuth batted a .400 with team-highs of 35 runs, 50 hits, 33 RBI, and 14 doubles, along with four homers. Bayliss was also a Second team All-NESCAC selection and Freimuth was First Team All-NESCAC selection. Bayliss was the NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 1998 and All-NESCAC First Team and Pitcher of the Year last spring. Freimuth was Second Team All-NESCAC performer in 1999.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, MA), Jarrett's younger brother, was selected to the Second Team All-NESCAC squad and was the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Jonah Bayliss was 6-2 with a 1.91 earned run average and 46 strikeouts in 47.0 innings on the mound this spring.

Powell and Spanos will play in the 26th annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star Game as members of the College Division Team, which consists of First Team All-New England players from Divisions II and III. They will face the University Division Team, consisting of Division I All-New England players. Jarrett Bayliss and Freimuth will play in the third annual Junior College Athletic Association Region 21 All-Star Game, which features members of the Junior College all-stars against the Division III All-New England Second Team. The game will be played on Saturday, June 3, 2000 at 3 p.m. at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT.
