Hartford, Conn., May 9 - Five Trinity College senior student-athletes were initiated into Phi Beta Kappa of Connecticut last month. Each student-athlete honored has demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and maintained a grade point average of at least 3.50 within his or her academic major. All five are also four-year varsity letterwinners within his or her given sport, including four team captains. |

Four-year varsity softball player and three-year varsity field hockey player Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.), women’s swimming and diving co-captain Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, Mass.), co-captain and All-American women’s squash player Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe), women’s tennis co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.), and men’s cross country tri-captain and track and field athlete Steven Napier (Blue Bell, Pa.) were each initiated into the Connecticut Beta chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Bullock played in 26 games, starting all of them, in the outfield this season, and batted .172 (11-for-64) with four runs, 11 doubles, and four RBI. A graduate of Fayatteville-Manlius High School in New York, Bullock maintains a 3.60 GPA as a philosophy and religion major at Trinity.
The Trinity softball team, coached by Tamara Hyde (2nd season) finished with a 7-22 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
Lafleur helped the Bantam 800-yard freestyle relay team post a team-best time of 8:18.23 at the NESCAC Championships. A NESCAC All-Academic selection for the winter seasons of 2000-01 and 2001-02, Lafleur swam Trinity’s top time of the season in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.07). A graduate of Belchertown High School, Lafleur maintains a 3.78 GPA as a biology and chemistry major at Trinity.
The Trinity women’s swimming and diving team, coached by Kristen Noone (2nd season) finished with a 3-7 dual record and placed 10th at the NESCAC Championships this season.
Lewins, a three-time NESCAC Winter All-Academic, posted an 8-6 record this season including a 7-3 dual match mark, playing the No. 4 position for the Bantams. An All-American performer in 1999-00 and 2000-01, Lewins was Trinity’s Junior Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season and finished as the No. 24-ranked player in all of intercollegiate squash this season. Lewins is a graduate of the Chisiple School in Zimbabwe, and maintains a 3.74 GPA as a history major at Trinity.
The Bantam women’s squash squad, coached by Wendy Bartlett (17th season), posted a perfect 11-0 record and captured its first Women’s Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) Howe Cup Team Championship title.
Mate, a NESCAC Spring All-Academic selection in 2001, has a 9-5 singles record this season, playing the No. 2 position for the Bantams, and a 7-8 doubles mark playing at the No. 1 position with junior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.). Mate is a graduate of Newport High School, and maintains a 3.63 GPA as a political science major at Trinity.
The Bantam women’s tennis squad, also coached by Bartlett, finished the 2001-02 regular season with an 11-3 record and finished second in the NESCAC Championships this spring. The Bantams have qualified for a third straight NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, and will play Bowdoin in the first round on May 10.
Napier competed in the cross country and the indoor and outdoor track and field season for four straight years, posting Trinity’s top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:59.30) in 2001. A NESCAC All-Academic selection for the spring of 2001, Napier was Trinity’s Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season. A graduate of Wissahickon High School, Napier maintains a 3.69 GPA as an economics major at Trinity.
The Trinity men’s cross country squad, coached by George Suitor (10th season) finished sixth in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. The Trinity men’s indoor track and field team, also coached by Suitor, finished 11th at the New England Division III Championships and 13th at the NCAA Division III National Championships this season. The men’s outdoor track and field team finished 14th at the New England Division III Championships under Suitor’s tutelage this season.
