Spring Athletes Earn NESCAC All-Academic Honors |

Baseball
Trinity College baseball sophomore Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) was named to the 2000-01 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35.The Bantam baseball squad, coached by Bill Decker, posted a best-ever 25-10 overall record and 9-3 NESCAC East Division mark. Trinity qualified for the NESCAC Championship as the second-place team in the NESCAC East in 2000-01.
Dorr, who was also selected as a NESCAC All-Academic athlete as a member of the Trinity football team this fall, played in 34 out of 35 games (33 starts) at several positions for Coach Decker this spring. A versatile defensive player, Dorr filled in at second base, third base, shortstop, and in the outfield, batting .323 (40 for 124) with 24 runs, 25 RBI, and 12 doubles.
A 1999 graduate of the Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut, Dorr maintains a 3.83 grade point average as an economics major at Trinity. He is the son of Elyse and Don Dorr.
Softball
Trinity College sophomore Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) was named to the 2000-01 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35. The Bantam softball squad, coached by Tammi Hyde, posted a 7-22 overall record and 1-11 NESCAC East Division mark.
Heath started all 29 games in centerfield for the Bantams, batting a team-high .268 (22 for 82) with team-highs of 13 RBI, and two home runs, as well as nine runs scored and three assists from the outfield. She was selected to the 2001 All-NESCAC second team.
A 1999 graduate of Windsor High School, Heath maintains a 3.7 grade point average at Trinity. She is the daughter of Linda and Jon Heath.
Women's Lacrosse
Trinity College women’s lacrosse senior tri-captain Melissa Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) was named to the 2001 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35.
The Bantam women’s ice lacrosse squad, coached by Kara Tierney, posted an 8-8 record and a 3-6 league mark to finish tied for sixth in the NESCAC. Trinity qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship in 2000-01, losing at Wheaton College, 11-8, in the quarterfinals.
Marlette, who was also a NESCAC All-Academic selection last season, started all 16 games at attack and finished third on the team in assists with 13. Marlette added nine goals to finish with 22 points, along with 38 ground balls and 15 turnovers caused. In her Bantam career, Marlette totaled 46 games (21 starts) with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points and helped Trinity qualify for two ECAC Championship tournaments and an NCAA Division III Championship tourney in 1998.
A 1997 graduate of the Nichols School, Marlette maintained a 3.4 grade point average as a political science and education major at Trinity. She is the daughter of Edward and Devon Marlette.
Men's Lacrosse
Trinity College men’s lacrosse sophomore Erik Mazmanian (Newton, Mass.) was named to the 2001 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35.
The Bantam men’s lacrosse squad, coached by Mike Darr, posted a 6-8 record and a 4-5 league mark to finish tied for fifth in the NESCAC. Trinity lost, 11-7, at Connecticut College in the quarterfinals. Mazmanian played his way into the regular midfield rotation this spring, recording one assist. A 1999 graduate of Newton North High School, he is the son of Brian and Carol Mazmanian.
Men's Tennis
Hartford, Conn., Mar. 29 - Trinity College men’s tennis senior co-captain George Kaneb (Cornwall, Ontario) was named to the 2001 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35.
The Bantam men’s tennis squad, coached by Paul Assaiante, posted a 14-5 overall record and finished second in the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Trinity earned a bid to its third consecutive NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, advancing to the second round.
Kaneb, who was also a NESCAC All-Academic selection in 1999-00, posted a 9-6 record this season including an 8-5 dual match mark. He also went 9-7 in doubles matches, playing with junior Peter Green (New York, N.Y.). Kaneb and Green advanced to the semifinals of the No. 3 doubles flight in the NESCAC Championships and won an 8-0 match at No. 3 doubles in the NCAA Championship first round against Bates.
Kaneb graduated from Trinity this spring with a bachelor’s degree in history. He is the son of Tom and Gail Kaneb.
Women's Tennis
Trinity College women’s tennis senior co-captain Olga Bogatyrenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) and junior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) were each named to the 2001 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35.
The Bantam women’s tennis squad, coached by Wendy Bartlett, posted a 9-5 overall record and advanced to its second consecutive NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Bogatyrenko, who was also a NESCAC All-Academic selection in 1999-00, posted a 14-6 singles record this season, including an 10-4 dual match mark, and 10-8 in doubles play. In her 2.5-year career after transferring to Trinity from Kharkov State University in the spring semester of her sophomore year, Bogatyrenko compiled a 30-12 singles mark.
Bogatyrenko advanced to the semifinal round of the 2000-01 New England Intercollegiate Division III Championship No. 4 singles flight. Teaming with freshman Sarah Krueger (Burlington, Vt.), she also reached the semifinals of the 2000-01 NESCAC Championship doubles “B” flight.
Mate posted a 14-6 singles record this season, including a 10-3 dual match mark, and a 10-10 record in doubles play. She advanced to the semifinal round of the 2000-01 New England Intercollegiate Division III Championship No. 3 singles flight. In her three-year career, Mate has compiled a 28-23 singles mark.
Bogatyrenko maintained a 3.8 grade point average as a political science major at Trinity, while Mate has a 3.36 grade point average in political science.
Track and Field
Three Trinity track and field athletes were selected to the 2001 New England Small College Athletic Conference Spring All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete honored is a starter or key reserve on an officially sponsored varsity sport with a grade point average of at least 3.35. The Bantam women’s outdoor squad, coached by George Suitor, finished 12 at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships this spring. The men’s squad, also coached by Suitor, finished 16th at the New England Championships.
Sophomore Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.), also a NESCAC All-Academic selection this fall as a member of the Bantam cross country squad, posted the team’s season-best time (1:46) in the 600-meter run during the 2000-01 indoor season. She also had the third-best time (10:53.20) on the team in the 3,000-meter run during the outdoor season. A 1999 graduate of Mount Mansfield High School, Klein maintains a 3.6 grade point average as an engineering major at Trinity. She is the daughter of Janet Labelle.
Senior track and field and cross country co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, Alaska) was a NESCAC All-Academic selection in the falls of 1998, 1999 and 2000 as a member of the Bantam men’s cross country squad and in the springs of 1999, 2000, and 2001 in track. He set a new College record in the 3,000-meter run (8:43.28) during the 2000-01 indoor season, while earning All-ECAC and All-New England (Division III and Open) honors. In his Bantam career, Markelz has been named to the cross country All-NESCAC and All-New England teams twice and to the All-American team in the fall of 2000. He was also an All-NESCAC selection in track in the spring of 2000.
Selected as the College’s junior male scholar athlete of the year in 2000 and its top senior male scholar athlete this year, Markelz maintained a 3.8 grade point average as a computer science major at Trinity. He is a 1997 graduate of Homer High School and the son of Marrianne and William Markelz.
Junior track and field and cross country co-captain Steven Napier (Blue Bell, Pa.) recorded Trinity’s season-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:59.30) this spring. He also had the team’s second-best time in the 1,000-meter run during the 2000-01 indoor season (2:47.61), and was selected as the College’s junior male scholar athlete of the year this spring. A 1998 graduate of Wissahickon High School, Napier maintains a 3.7 grade point average as an economics and computer science major at Trinity. He is the son of John and Jeanne Napier.
