Assaiante Trades Tennis
for Athletic Development Position
Trinity College

Coach Will Continue to Guide
Bantam Men’s Squash Program

Hartford, Conn., July 16 - Paul Assaiante (Simsbury, Conn.) has announced he will step down as head coach of the Trinity College men’s tennis team after seven seasons to assume duties in the newly created position of director of athletic development and college relations. Last season, Assaiante guided the Bantams to a 14-5 record and a third consecutive NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearance.

Assaiante will remain as head coach of Trinity’s three-time defending national intercollegiate champion men’s squash team. In this new position, he will direct a two-tiered fundraising effort toward establishing an endowment to finance the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and obtaining capital gifts for the purpose of funding a comprehensive upgrade of the College’s athletic facilities.

“I am excited about this opportunity to have a greater impact on the overall development of the Trinity athletic program. An upgrade in our facilities is necessary if we, as a department, are to establish ourselves as an elite Division III intercollegiate athletic program”, states Assaiante. “The men’s tennis squad is now capable of competing with the top teams on a national level, and these athletes deserve a coach who can devote all his time and energy toward their success. I believe all the sports programs at Trinity will benefit from the change.”

“This position change will allow Coach Assaiante to concentrate on two areas in which he has proven expertise”, states Trinity Athletic Director Richard Hazelton. “His outstanding record as men’s squash coach speaks for itself, while the current renovation of our squash facility illustrates his considerable fundraising skills. In his new role, Coach Assaiante will have a significant and positive effect on the overall needs of the athletic department.”

Assaiante was named the Trinity men’s squash and tennis coach in 1994, posting a 75-31 tennis record with three NCAA Division III Championship appearances in his tenure. He will begin his eighth season as head men’s squash coach this season, after leading the Bantams to a remarkable 110-10 record in the last seven years. Trinity has won the last three National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) National Team Championship (Potter Trophy) titles, and currently owns a 52-match winning streak dating back to the 1998 NISRA finals.

Assaiante also currently serves as the head coach the United States National Squash Team, which will compete in both the World Championships in Australia and the Pan American Games in El Salvador this October. In addition, he coaches the Hartford FoxForce World Team Tennis franchise in the summer months.

Assaiante earned his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1974 and holds master’s degrees from both his alma mater and Long Island University. He came to Trinity after stints as racquet sports director at several of the top clubs in the nation and head collegiate squash and tennis coaching positions at Williams College and West Point.
