Meet Will Be Aired Live on ESPN2

Hartford, Conn., Feb. 26 - Trinity College senior co-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) has qualified for the 2003 United States of America Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held this weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. Bak, the defending NCAA Division III Indoor Track 1,500-meter champion and the reigning NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Champion, will be one of just 10 runners and the only collegian to compete in the 1,500-meter run at the Championships.

The top two finishers in the race, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 6:34 p.m. (subject to change), will represent the United States in the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, England on March 14-16.

Bak is easily the most dominant runner ever to compete for Trinity, coached by George Suitor (11th season), and arguably the best runner in all of NCAA Division III this season. Over the course of 2002-03 indoor track and field season, Bak has set new College records in the 800-, 1,000-, 1,500-, 3,000-, and 5,000-meter runs, as well as the mile. In each case, Bak broke a record that he had set during the 2001-02 campaign. Making his accomplishments during this indoor season even more impressive is the tenth of a mile, indoor track on which he practices at Trinity. Constantly forced to make turns on the small track and faced with various inclines and declines on the surface, Bak cannot duplicate the conditions of actual competition during his training.

Bak has proven himself in the fall and spring seasons as well, earning All-American honors in cross country twice and several times in outdoor track. He also excels in the classroom, boasting four NESCAC All-Academic awards and a selection as Trinity’s Junior Male Scholar Athlete of the Year last spring.
