Hartford, Conn., July 17 - Lawrence Gluckman (Morrisville, Vt.) and Lyllah Martin (West Hartford, Conn.) have been hired as the head men’s rowing coach and the head women’s rowing coach at Trinity College. |
Gluckman, formerly the head crew coach at Columbia University, Princeton University, and Dartmouth College, returns to the coaching ranks after spending the last 12 years in private business in the rowing industry. Martin is promoted to the head position after serving as Trinity’s novice coach for the past three seasons.
The Trinity men’s varsity eight posted a 10-1 record in 2002-03, finished sixth in the New England Rowing Championships, and 13th in the ECAC National Invitational Regatta. The Bantam women’s varsity eight recorded a 5-4 record, before winning its first New England Championship title which helped them qualify as a wild card for the program’s first NCAA Division III Championship. After finishing eighth in the ECAC National Invitational Regatta, Trinity finished fifth in the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.
Gluckman coached the heavyweight crews at Princeton from 1981 to 1989 and at Dartmouth from 1989 to 1991, before leaving coaching for a position with Concept2 rowing products. An elite coach during the 1980’s, Gluckman built both Princeton and Dartmouth from mediocrity to championship caliber rowing programs. He guided Princeton to an Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) title in 1985 and positioned Dartmouth to capture the Eastern Sprints title in 1992. Gluckman was selected to coach the United States Olympic Rowing Team in 1980 and 1984. Prior to 1981, Gluckman was an assistant and head rowing coach at Columbia, a special education and high school teacher in Massachusetts, an assistant coach at Northeastern University, and an assistant coach at Princeton.
A 1969 graduate of Northeastern with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and science, Gluckman rowed for the United States National Team and in the Olympics from 1967 to 1976. He earned a master’s degree in special education from Columbia in 1971. Gluckman replaces Steve Fluhr, who coached the Bantams for 13 seasons.
“I am most proud of the success we had in helping crews grow into top programs, and hope to accomplish similar success and more at a place with such a rich rowing history. I have high aspirations for our performance”, states Gluckman. “I expect to compete and win at the highest level and to give Trinity athletes the chance to row for elite teams after college.”
Martin has played a vital role in the development of the Trinity women’s rowing program to unprecedented levels over the past three years. Her novice crews have performed at a high level each year. In 2003, Martin’s boats finished first in the New England Championships and second in the final race in the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championships with a novice group that included 28 rowers with no prior experience. Martin was also an assistant coach at Wesleyan University during the 1999-00 season.
A 1999 graduate of Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in religion, Martin rowed for four years and served as captain in 1998 and 1999. She was also a two-year starter for the Wesleyan women’s basketball squad. Martin, who is pursuing her master’s degree in public policy at Trinity, replaces Lou O’Brien Berl ’89 who was Trinity’s interim head coach in 2002-03 before stepping down to concentrate on her family.
“I am thrilled to have the chance to stay at Trinity. I believe in the NESCAC philosophy and Division III athletics, and will do my best to build on the outstanding performances of this past spring”, says Martin.
“We are very excited about the position of our rowing programs with Coach Gluckman and Coach Martin at the helm. Gluckman brings a wealth of experience and past success that immediately legitimizes Trinity men’s crews as a force to be reckoned with”, states Trinity Athletic Director Richard Hazelton. “Coach Martin has been an extremely important part of the rapid development of the women’s crews in recent years, and has earned this opportunity through her success with the younger boats. Together with our exceptional staff and state-of-the-art facilities, including a brand, new boathouse, Trinity boasts one of the top Division III rowing programs in the nation.”
