Bantam Crews Row in ECAC Championships This Weekend

Hartford, Conn., May 8 - The Trinity College women’s rowing team, which won its first ever New England Championship last Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond, will compete in the 2003 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Championships on Saturday, May 10 and Sun., May 11 on Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

The Bantam men’s team, which finished sixth in the New England Championships, will also compete in the ECAC Championships this weekend.

The Bantam women’s squad, coached by Lou O’Brien Berl (1st season), are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III New England Regional rankings and in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)/US Rowing Division III National Poll. This week's NCAA Division III New England Regional Rankings: 1. Trinity (Conn.), 2. Coast Guard, 3. Colby, 4. Williams, 5. Mount Holyoke

The Trinity varsity eight crew can earn its first trip to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held May 28-30 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., if they finish first among the eight New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) schools competing in the ECAC Championships. Should another school earn the league’s automatic bid, the Bantams also have a good chance to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships with a strong showing this weekend.

Trinity finished less than a second ahead of its closest competitor and finished first in the grand final of the New England Rowing Championships last weekend, while the Trinity women's second varsity eight, and men's and women's second novice eight boats each won the grand final in its category.

The Bantam women’s varsity eight finished with a time of 6:40.46, which was 0.83 seconds ahead of second place New Hampshire in the grand final. Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England in NCAA Division III, No. 7 among schools entered in the race, and No. 9 nationally entering the New England Championships, qualified for the grand final with the fifth fastest time of the three preliminary heats. Trinity finished ahead of six Division III teams that had been ranked higher than the Bantams entering the weekend.

The women's first varsity eight line-up consisted of senior Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) in the bow seat, senior co-captains Amanda Gifford (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) and Ashley Donoghue (Humerick, Mass.), senior Katherine Jessup (Wellesley, Mass.), sophomore Danielle Markel (Villanova, Pa.), freshmen Sarah Carter (Durham, N.H.) and Hadley Wilmerding (Haverford, Pa.), junior Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.), and sophomore coxswain Emily McLean (Fisher's Island, N.Y.).
