Hartford, Conn., Dec. 13 – Trinity junior back Phil Flakes (Medway,
Mass.) was selected to the 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA) Division III All-New England First Team. Bantam
senior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) was
selected to the NSCAA Division III All-New England Second Team.
The Trinity men’s soccer squad, coached by Ed Mighten (13th season) posted a 7-7-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in the league, qualifying for its first NESCAC Championship Tournament. The Bantams lost in the tournament first round, 5-1, at Middlebury. |

Flakes started all 13 games in which he played this season at sweeper, helping Trinity outshoot its opponents by an average of almost two shots per game (240 - 211). A first team All-NESCAC selection in 2000 and 2002, as well as a second team all-league honoree as a freshman in 1999, Flakes also graced the All-New England Third Team squad in 1999 and 2000. He is a graduate of the Noble & Greenough School.
Sandell started all 13 games in which he played, leading the team and finishing second in the NESCAC in scoring with 10 goals and eight assists (0.62 per game was 14th in the nation) for 28 points (2.15 points per game was 28th in the nation). A first team All-NESCAC selection in 2000 and 2001, as well as a 2001 second team All-New England honoree, Sandell notched 31 goals and 18 assists for 80 points, including five game-winning goals, in his career. He is also graduate of the Noble & Greenough School.
