Roberts and DePeau Receive Awards
For Community Service and Athletics

Hartford, Conn., July 23 - Men’s squash senior Thaddeus Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa.) and women’s cross country and track and field junior Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) were selected as the 2002-03 recipients of Trinity College’s Robert R. Bartlett Awards. The Bartlett Awards are presented annually to the College’s top male and female student-athletes who have combined athletic excellence with a devotion to community and/or campus service.

The Bantam men’s squash team, coached by Paul Assaiante (9th season) finished the 2002-03 season with a 19-0 record (tied College record). Trinity won its fifth consecutive College Squash Association (CSA) Men’s Team Championship (Potter Trophy) and extended its winning streak to 90 straight matches dating back to 1998.

The Trinity women’s cross country squads, coached by George Suitor (11th season) finished fourth in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. The Bantams qualified for their first NCAA Division III National Championships in Minnesota, finishing 14th overall in the nation. The Trinity women’s track teams, also coached by Suitor, placed 11th in the 2002-03 NESCAC Championships and 18th in the New England Division III Outdoor Championships.

Roberts posted a perfect 12-0 record this season, appearing among the top nine against some of the tough opponents in intercollegiate squash. He finished his fine career with a flawless 24-0 record.

DePeau, a consistent All-New England distance performer in track and field as a sophomore, battled through an injury plagued junior campaign. She finished one place shy of qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championship as an individual in 2001.

Roberts has been an active member of the Squashwise program, teaching the sport to inner-city children in Hartford. He served as Special Ambassador to Trinity’s Study Abroad Office, organizing and implementing activities, and was the Community Service Chair for Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. Roberts has also volunteered in homeless shelters, cleaned city gardens, and instructed children at the Trinity Boys and Girls Club about diet and nutrition. He was a member of the Trinity Chapel Singers and Concert Choir,

DePeau has a wealth of community activity both inside and outside the Trinity campus. She is a mentor for the InterArts Program, active in the Trinity Anti-War Coalition, a teaching assistant in several disciplines, a health fellow at the Hartford Children’s Medical Center, a high school tutor in Hartford, an assistant at a elderly care facility, and a member of Physicians for Human Rights.
