Words from a student |
If you are like I was, you might be wondering what college life will be like for you. I can tell you that when I look back on my freshman year, I remember the entire first semester being really packed with activities for us. There was always something being held for freshmen, so meeting people was never a problem. Getting enough sleep was certainly a tougher challenge than meeting people.
At first, I was a little nervous about getting involved in student activities. For example, I hadn't really planned to do any musical theater after high school, but have since performed in four productions at the College. In some cases, I was encouraged by faculty or older students to get involved in certain activities, and found that, as a freshman, one can play a larger role in campus organizations at Trinity than one might be able to at a larger institution.
As soon as I realized how easy it was to get involved in student groups, I joined many of them. And because of my interest in music, particularly blues, I've started a couple of groups at Trinity and even performed concerts with faculty members. The College is very supportive of student run performance groups. The groups I am in have performed on campus and off, including in The Bistro, which has musical performance nights every week.
Although I grew up in the Hartford area, I thought I could take advantage of Hartford's resources better if I enrolled at Trinity. While attending the College, I have free-lanced for The Hartford Courant, writing numerous articles that will build up my portfolio for a career in journalism. I also sing for Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Hartford.
The fact that Hartford is a relatively small city can work to one's advantage when seeking out job opportunities or internships. I think it's a lot easier to know where to start looking. I'm really pleased that I have been able to incorporate my career interests off campus with my academic life on campus.
Now that I have just started my junior year, I look back on the past two years with satisfaction. I'm glad I'm here and look forward to more exploration in my last two years at Trinity. Choosing the right college is never easy. It comes down to finding the college that best meets your individual academic and personal needs. Since coming to Trinity, one thing has made itself clear to me: If there is something you want to pursue and you truly believe in it, Trinity will make it happen. I wish you luck with your college search and hope to see you at Trinity in the future.
