Trinity Well-Represented at Women’s Forum
Several members of the College community took
part in the College Women’s Leadership Forum, hosted by the State of
Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW). The
November 7 event, held at the State Capitol, focused on a range of
topics including gender equity, illegal trafficking in women and
children, and eating disorders and body image. Students and faculty
members from numerous state colleges and universities participated in
the discussions.
Robin L. Sheppard, associate athletic director,
was a member of a panel that examined the history of gender equity
legislation (Title IX), sexual harassment, the relationship between
Title IX and athletics, and the research currently being conducted by
the American Association of University Women. Sheppard is an appointed
commissioner on the PCSW and also serves as secretary of the
commission’s executive committee.
Laura Lockwood, director of the women’s center,
also attended the day-long forum and brought five female students to
take part in the discussions. The students were selected based on
their leadership roles involving women’s issues on campus. Lockwood
participated in a workshop titled, “The Application of Academic
Scholarship on Women’s Issues and Public Policy in Connecticut.” The
forum featured morning discussion groups prior to the regular PCSW
meeting in the afternoon, with several state legislators joining the
women for lunch between sessions.
