Sports Highlights
Trinity will host the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
Baseball Championships for the first time this weekend. The team,
coached by Bill Decker, finished the regular season with a 27-7 record
and won the NESCAC East Division at 10-2. The Bantams will play
Amherst on Friday, May 7, at 3 p.m. The other teams are NESCAC West
Division Champion Williams and NESCAC East second place team Bowdoin.
First and second round games in the double elimination, round robin
tournament will take place at both Wesleyan and Trinity.
The men's squash team will be honored at the Boston Red Sox game on
Sunday, May 9. Head Coach Paul Assaiante will throw out the first
pitch. The team won its sixth straight College Squash Association
National Championship title, posting an 18-0 record, and extended its
winning streak to 108 matches in a row.
At the College’s Annual Athletic Awards Ceremony, held April 28 in
Mather Hall, Trinity honored its 2004 award recipients. Eight
student-athletes and one faculty member were selected to receive this
year’s honors.
Professor of Economics Diane Zannoni was selected as the Bantam Award
recipient for her outstanding contributions as a non-student to the
Trinity athletic community in a non-coaching capacity.
Student award winners are:
Women’s squash co-captain Amina Helal, awarded the Trinity Club of
Hartford Trophy and the Susan E. Martin Award as the College’s most
outstanding senior female athlete;
Football captain Jared Carillo, awarded the George Sheldon McCook
Trophy as the College’s most outstanding senior male athlete;
Men’s ice hockey co-captain Dan Gyllstrom, winner of the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Award as the College’s most outstanding
senior male scholar athlete;
Christina Kane, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field,
recipient of the Board of Fellows Award as the College’s most
outstanding junior female scholar athlete;
Rob Bialobrzeski, soccer, recipient of the Bob Harron Award as the
College’s most outstanding junior male scholar athlete;
Junior Louis Evans, cross country and indoor and outdoor track and
field tri-captain, received the Robert E. Bartlett Award as the male
student-athlete who has combined excellence in athletics with devotion
to campus and community service;
Senior Carolyn Walker, volleyball captain and women’s rowing
co-captain, recipient of the Robert E. Bartlett Award as the female
student athlete who has combined excellence in athletics with devotion
to campus and community service;
Senior men’s ice hockey manager David Huoppi, recipient of the Larry
Silver Award for his outstanding contributions as a student to the
Trinity athletic community in a non-playing capacity.
