| What kind of students should consider applying for admission to the
Tutorial College? Many in the Tutorial College will have already excelled in their courses, but were looking for potential as well as for achievement. We hope to work with people who are intellectually daring, open to new experiences in the arts, eager to explore ideas in the sciences people who are willing to play hunches, propose hypotheses, share ideas, argue, make mistakes, and keep investigating. How can I apply to the Tutorial College If your are interested in applying to the Tutorial College, you should talk first to your faculty adviser and your mentor. Then you should speak with at least one of the Tutorial College faculty members, who can give you advice about the application process. Completed application forms should be turned into Louise Fisher, director of special academic programs, by March 1. The sooner you turn in your application and your essay, the sooner we can schedule your interview. If I am admitted into the Tutorial College, what happens then? If you are accepted into the Tutorial College, you will be so notified before March 27, and you will given one week to decide whether you intend to enroll. Since there is room in the Tutorial College for only about 55 students each year, it is not always possible to accommodate all those who wish to participate. Will participation in the Tutorial College limit my choice of major? No. The Tutorial College program is compatible with every major at Trinity. Through the program you will build a sound foundation for your education while you explore ideas that may help you choose your major. I would like to take courses related to my major during my sophomore year. Can I still participate in the Tutorial College? Yes. You are expected each semester to take two courses outside the Tutorial College. This will enable you to pursue your major and to venture into new fields of study. How will my work be graded? Thinking and reading and discussing and writing thats the journey youll be taking in the Tutorial College. You should never treat a grade, not even an A+, as your destination. Let grades be no more than signposts you pass on your journey. In the Tutorial College you can count on seeing a lot of signs, not just grades but comments and counter- arguments, and suggestions for further research that will indicate how far youve come, what might lie ahead for you, and how to get there. The professor for your section will assign your grades for your work in your section and your tutorials. Sometimes other professors will also grade your work and , of course, since professors may use different standards, the grades for your essay or project or whatever may differ. The final grade for your work in the assembly will be assigned jointly by all five faculty members. Ultimately, the professors who know your work best will give you the grades that will appear on your transcript. What course credits will show up on my transcript for my studies in the Tutorial College? By completing the Tutorial College program satisfactorily, you will earn five course credits; and you will fulfill Trinitys distribution requirements. |
