–Trinity

the appointment of

Schenectady, New

dean of students.
A Connecticut

brings more than 20
year’s experience in
higher education and
working with
students back to his
home state. He
formerly served as
dean of students at
Hawthorne College in
Antrim, New
Hampshire; a
graduate and then
research assistant
at Harvard
University; and as

College. Alford held
the position of dean
of students at Union
College for 10
years.
Of her new
colleague’s
experience, Trinity
College Vice
President for
Student Services,
Sharon Herzberger,
notes, “During his
time at Union, Fred
focused on promoting
education first and
foremost and on
erasing artificial
distinctions between
work and play in the
residential
environment.”
Herzberger
continues, “At this
critical time of
self-study at
Trinity, Fred's
experience and
expertise will prove
extremely useful.
But the bottom line
is that he loves
students and will be
a great advocate and
supporter of their
intellectual and
personal growth.”
Alford received his
B.A. in psychology
from Hawthorne
College, a master’s
degree in education
from Antioch
University, and a
doctorate in
education from
Harvard University
The following
statement by Roger
H. Hull, Union
College president,
announcing Fred’s
departure,
reinforces that
expectation: “Fred
has been a
tremendously
positive force in
his years at Union.
In hundreds of ways,
he has worked to
improve student life
here. I know he has
always felt that the
future of the
College rests, to a
great extent, in the
hands of the
students, and his
encouragement of
their efforts has
been influential in
making this
community stronger.”
