Trinity College
Moves Up to Number 22 Among Top 50 Liberal Arts Colleges in U.S.
News& World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges"
Also Recognized
for Engineering and Service Learning Programs
HARTFORD, Conn., August.
20,2003. Trinity College ranks 22nd among the top 50 “Best
Liberal Arts Colleges” in the annual rankings published by the U.S.
News and World Report. Moving up three places, the higher standing
can be attributed to several factors related to student selectivity
and faculty resources.
In terms of student selectively figures, the
percentage of Trinity College freshmen in the top 10% of their high
school class is up significantly and the SAT scores are higher. In
computing the faculty resources rank, the magazine
used six factors from the 2002–03 academic
year to determine the College’s commitment to instruction, including
class size, faculty salary, and student-faculty ratio.
“The gains we have made in the U.S. News
ranking illustrate the caliber of our students and the continuing
dedication of the College in providing whatever resources are needed
to endow them with an outstanding liberal arts education,” notes
Trinity College Interim President, Borden Painter. “When coupled with
the depth and diversity of our faculty, ensuring that our academic
resources are among the best creates a dynamic atmosphere and an
intellectually-charged student body.”
Trinity College was also ranked among the top 50 in the “Best
Undergraduate Engineering Programs” category, which includes both
public and private universities and colleges. In the “Programs to Look
For” category, which acknowledges schools with outstanding academic
programs, U.S. News and World Report lists the nationally
renowned Community Learning Initiative at Trinity College as a
“stellar” example of a service-learning program. Indeed, Trinity’s
award-winning service-learning program, in which student volunteerism
has become an integral part of the curriculum in a number of
classrooms, has become a national model for other schools.
