Borden W. Painter,

Borden W. Painter Jr.,
’58, ’95 Hon., Trinity College alumnus and highly respected history
professor, scholar, and administrator, has been appointed by the
College’s Board of Trustees to serve as Trinity’s acting president,
succeeding Richard H. Hersh. Painter will take office on Monday,
August 4th. Board of Trustees Chairman Paul E. Raether ’68
made the announcement naming
Painter as the 20th president of the College, noting
that Painter had served the College with distinction once before in
this role in 1994-1995.
“We are most
fortunate to have someone in our midst who is not only well versed in
the life and issues of this college community, but who also has
consistently earned the admiration and respect of the Board, faculty
colleagues, alumni, students, and administrative staff,” said Raether.
“Knowing of Borden’s unrelenting dedication to this College and his
quest for excellence in liberal arts learning, the Board is confident
that the future of Trinity College and the well-being of its students
are in the best of hands.
“Our primary goal
continues to be to enhance Trinity’s academic reputation and to
strengthen the intellectual and social aspects of student life on
campus,” Raether continued. “Our charge to Borden is that he apply his
experience and commitment to the task of maintaining the aggressive
agenda that has been set in motion.”
“Assuming this
responsibility is indeed a real honor,” said Painter. “Trinity
College is an outstanding liberal arts college and has earned its
national reputation. The Board’s commitment to the strengthening of
the academic and social life of the campus is critical and
appreciated. I look forward to working with the Board, my faculty
colleagues, and the various constituencies of the College to build on
the significant progress that has been made in such areas as
curricular review, student recruitment, alumni support, campus
facilities, and our community relationships.”
Painter, who currently
serves as a professor of history as well as Director of Italian
Programs, including the Rome Program and Elderhostel in Italy, came to
Trinity in 1964 as an assistant professor of history. He subsequently
served as History Department Chairman (1974-79 and 1989-93), Secretary
of the Faculty, Dean of the Faculty (1984-87) and as mentioned, Acting
President (1994-1995). He has also served as chairman of the
Admissions Committee, coordinator of the Freshman Seminar Program and
the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program and Chairman of the Board
of Trustees of the Cesare Barbieri Endowment for Italian Studies.
Additionally, he currently serves as secretary of Trinity’s chapter of
Phi Beta Kappa.
An honors graduate of
Trinity College with a B.A. in history, he received his M.A. (’59) and
Ph.D (’65) in history from Yale University and his M. Div. cum
laude from General Theological Seminary, pursuing a dual calling
as European historian and Episcopal priest. Author of numerous
publications and papers, he received the Mead History Prize in 1955
and was honored by Trinity College in 1995 with an honorary degree of
Doctor of Humane Letters.
Painter will serve as
acting president until such time as a permanent president has been
recruited, a process which the Board will now initiate.
