Cultivating Dreams, One Camper at a Time:
Dream Camp at Trinity Offers Hartford Kids Rich Blend of Summer Activities
Hartford, Conn.—July 2, 2004—
Dream Camp at Trinity College, a summer program for children ages 6
though 16, begins July 6 and runs through August 7. Founded at Trinity
in 1998 Dream Camp is a unique camp experience for children who attend
Hartford public and parochial schools. Children are selected to attend
the camp after being nominated by teachers, counselors, or school
coaches. The summer program is complimented by an academic year
enrichment/mentoring program, also held on campus.
This year’s Dream Camp summer program at Trinity is hosting more than
300 children as they participate in a variety of activities designed
to help them discover previously unknown talents and interests. They
can play familiar games like basketball and baseball, as well as
street hockey, lacrosse, and track and field events. In addition,
campers are invited to join the Dream Camp Drama Guild, where they
participate in skits, storytelling, and puppetry. They can also
experiment with science projects—discovering the properties of
magnets, electricity, light, and water; or learn about insects and
dinosaurs.
Sponsored by the College and supported by a variety of foundations,
Dream Camp is coordinated by Cari Salisbury ’98 and staffed by Trinity
students as well as teachers from the Harford community. The camp is
operated by ESF Summer Camps, a national organization that seeks to
ensure the healthy growth and development of youth through positive
recreation, mentoring, leadership development, and educational
activities. It consists of two related programs focusing on adjacent
age groups: the original Dream Camp, which draws children ages 6
though 9, and the National Youth Sports Program for children ages 10
through 16—a program that has enriched the lives of youth for over 30
years and recently came under the direction of ESF.
Funding for Dream Camp is provided through a major gift from an
anonymous Trinity alumnus, with additional support from the Ensworth
Charitable Foundation, The George A. and Grace L. Long Foundation, the
Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and the J. Walton Bissell
Foundation.
