Background: |

Since 1968,
Giovanni has
inspired readers
and critics and
established
herself as a
best-selling
poet, author,
and essayist.
One of our most
widely read
American poets,
she prides
herself on being
"a black
American, a
daughter, a
mother, a
professor of
English." She
has received
numerous awards,
including the
NAACP Image
Award, in 1998
and 2002.
Giovanni teaches
writing, poetry
and literature
at Virgina Tech,
where she was
named University
Distinguished
Professor.
