Free: Public School Lessons and the Imperative of School Choice,
the latest work by author Sol Stern, is a convicting piece of
journalism. Stern, who writes passionately on education
reform, and has helped shape the terms of the current debate in
New York City, notes that
teachers' unions supported by districts refuse to be held
responsible for public school failure and arrogantly demand that
more money be put into the system instead of offering parents the
choice to send their students to better performing schools.
He
also asserts that private institutions like Catholic schools are
educating inner-city students for half of public schools'
per-pupil cost – while the graduation rates and test scores of
inner-city public schools pale in comparison. Stern also a
contributing editor to City Journal, a supporter of school
vouchers, finds that in cities like Cleveland and Milwaukee, which
use the voucher program, have rescued large numbers of poor
minority children from violent, chaotic and failing public schools
where high expectations often result in high achievement.
This program is sponsored by Trinity College and the
Shelby Cullom Davis Endowment. The public is invited to the free
event. For more information contact Sandra Andrews at (860)
