Urban Nuns and Sophisticated Women: Locating Buddhist Nunneries in Early Northwest India

A Lecture by Dr. Gregory Schopen at Trinity College

Dr. Gregory Schopen from the University of California will discuss urban Buddhist nuns in India at Trinity College.

Background:  

Dr. Schopen currently teaches as a professor of Sanskrit and Buddhist Studies in the Department of East Asian languages and cultures at the University of California in Los Angeles. Schopen received his B.A in American Literature at Black Hills State College, his M.A. in History of Religions at McMaster University, and his Ph.D. in South Asian and Buddhist Studies at Australian National University.  Widely published, Schopen’s numerous articles, papers, and books reflect his abundant fields of interest, which include: Buddhist Studies and Indology, Pali, Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Tibetan Studies; History of Religions, Social and Religious History of South Asia; the Buddhist History, Archaeology, Epigraphy, and Architecture.
