Background: |

According to Barhydt, “Higher education is viewed as access to
opportunity in this country and, as the cost of that access
continues to rise, policymakers are beginning to look at who gains
that access.” He adds that affirmative action cases in 2003 became
the focal point of race-based admissions practices and also
sharpened the focus on other groups that might benefit in the
allocation of places at selective colleges
and universities.
Barhydt is a Trinity graduate with a B.A. in English and will
receive his master’s degree in public policy in May. Between 1982
and 2001Barhydt worked in the corporate world, while staying
connected to the non-profit world as a trustee or director of
several nonprofits. He also started The Wilderness Skills Fund at
The Waterbury Foundation, which, over the years, has provided
approximately 15 high-school and college-age students with
scholarships for the Outward Bound or Student Conservation
Association wilderness programs.
The public is invited to this free event, which is sponsored by
Trinity College’s Public Policy and Law Program. For further
