Changing Minds:

Mental Health on College Campuses Conference To Be Held at Trinity College

What:  

“Changing Minds: Mental Health on College Campuses” will take a broad look at mental health issues faced by college students on campuses today. From the mundane to the clinical, with a view towards encouraging more discussion of mental health issues and fighting stigma around discussion of mental health issues, the conference is among the first of its kind on a college campus.

     
When:   Saturday, April 3, 8:00 a.m. – 7:45 p.m.
Sunday, April 4, 7:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
     
Where:  

McCook Auditorium, on the Trinity College campus.

     
Background:  

This conference is designed to address the state of mental health on college campuses and how it could be improved, with a special focus on removing the stigma around topics relating to mental health.

Panel 1: Integrating Mental Health into the Campus
This panel will be consist of administrators, faculty, and health services personnel discussing how mental health appears from the administration/faculty point of view.

  • Anne Reuman, associate dean of students, Trinity College
  • Susan Fitzgerald, assistant vice president for student health and wellness, University of Hartford

  • Margaret Lindsey, director of First Year Program, Trinity College

Panel 2: The Many Facets of Mental Health
This panel with look at racial, gender and lesbian, gay, bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) students and special problems they may face because of these other factors.

  • Karla Spurlock-Evans, dean of multicultural affairs, Trinity College
  • Professor Laurel Baldwin-Ragaven, M.D., Henry Luce Professor of Health and Human Rights, Trinity College

Panel 3: Sex, Drugs and Starvation

This panel looks at some of the most common problems of mental health faced on a college campus: substance abuse, eating disorders and depression.

  • Paula Holmes, APRN, Institute of Living (eating disorders)
  • Paul Bibi, Stonehaven Program, St. Francis Hospital (substance abuse)
  • A member of Redefining Ideal Beauty Standards (RIBS), (eating disorders)
  • Dr. Ellen Dornelas, Ph.D., Preventive Cardiology, Hartford Hospital, (Smoking and Stress)

There is a $10 registration fee for non Trinity College students. The conference is being organized and hosted by Students to Unite Science and Humanitarian Interests (S.U.S.H.I). The conference is cosponsored by the Counseling Center, the Health Center, the dean of multicultural affairs, the New England College Health Association, the vice president of Student Services, the dean of Student’s Office, the Chaplin’s office, the Community Service and Civic Engagement, the Women’s Center, the Psychology Department, the Neuroscience Department, and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Department.
