| Taught by: Dr. Dan
Lloyd, Associate Professor of Philosophy The mind is a computer: this is the guiding
idea of much recent cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and cognitive neuroscience.
Through a series of laboratory exercises, we will explore what this idea means, and
whether it might be true. The exploration begins with the classical Turing machine,
the basis for modern digital computation, and moves toward an increasingly detailed
consideration of the inner workings of our brains as we perceive, think, and feel.
Most of the exercises will be based on computer simulations, which students can modify in
order to develop models of mind and conduct simulation experiments. |
