9/3 TH- Introduction. Screen Videos "Columbus Did Not Discover Us" & "In Search of Columbus." Distribute "Opposing Viewpoints" on Columbus." Read Chps. 1-3 in Burckholder & Johnson, Colonial Latin America and also for discussion on 9/8.

I. The Peoples of the Americas before Columbus

9/8 TU- Discuss Viewpoints on Columbus, and videos screened on 9/3, and discuss Chps. 1-3 in Burckholder 6 Johnson, Colonial Latin America.

9/9 W- Discuss Euraque's essay, "Multidisciplinarity & Cross Cultural Study in the Liberal Arts College of the 21^st Century: Reflections on a New Model." Introduction to the Lab and instruction by Dr. Susan Gilroy on the use of the YAPP, "on-line" Conference in the Library. Meet at the Reference Desk of the Library.

9/10 TH- No Class. Students will attend one of the seminars associated with the World Conference on Carnival. See the Carnival Web Page at <http://www.trincoll.edu/~carnival/>. Read in "on-line" Reserve, the assay on "Genes, Peoples and Languages," by L. Cavalli-Sforza from Biological Anthropology (1998).

9/15 TU- "Origins and Demographics of the Peoples of the Americas." Discuss L. Cavalli-Sforza from Biological Anthropology(1998). Read in "on-line" Reserve, Chp. 4, "The Monstrous Races of America" in P. Mason's Deconstructing America (1990) & Chp. 21 "The Problem of Recognition." In A. Pagden, The Fall of Natural Man (1986).

9/16 W- Discuss Mason a Pagden, and screen Video on the "Story of Human Evolution." Read in "On-Line" Reserve, C. Von Linne "The God-Given Order of Nature," and Johann F. Blumenbach, "The Degeneration of Races," from Race and the Enlightenment: A Reader (1997) in preparation for 9/17 & 9/22.

9/17 TH- No Class. Attend Lecture by Prof. Daniel Blackburn, Biology Dept., on "The First Diaspora: The Peopling of the Globe by Human Beings and their Ancestors," in Rittenberg Lounge, 4PM, Special Lecture within the Migrations & Diaspora Series. Be sure you have read, C. Von Linne "The God-Given Order of Nature," and Johann F. Blumenbach, "The Degeneration of Races," from Race and the Enlightenment: A Reader (1997).
