| Taught by: Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong, Visiting Assistant ProfessorWhen women demonstrated against the Miss America pageant in 1969, they entered the living rooms of Americans across the county. When these activists refused to speak to male reporters, they highlighted gender discriminations in media jobs. When they chanted "Miss America is a big Falsie!" they later regretted how the slogan targeted Miss America participants over the pageants corporate sponsors. This course focuses on the activism and ideas of the second wave womens movement. We will discuss issues such as racism in the womens movement, unionization of women, and reproductive rights. In addition, we will look at more recent writings about feminism and present campaigns for womens issues. Over the semester, we will have 4-5 short papers, a group presentation and the class will publish its own newsletter. | |
