Course Development Grants to Integrate Information Literacy Instruction

April 25, 2003

To: Members of the Faculty

From: Patricia Clark, Doris Kammradt and Ann Marie Krupski

Re: Course Development Grants to Integrate Information Literacy Instruction

As part of the CTW Mellon Grant for Information Literacy, up to twelve course-development grants of $2000 each will be awarded to Trinity faculty for the integration of information literacy instruction into teaching and assignments.  The grants will be available for courses offered in Spring 04, Fall 04 or Spring 05.

The purpose of the grants is to support the collaboration of faculty with library and academic computing liaisons in the development of syllabi, assignments and teaching tools that address the established standards for information literacy (for information on the standards see http://www.trincoll.edu/prog/infolit/add_resources.htm).

The focus for the grants will be on courses that are required for all majors or constitute core introductory courses for a discipline or program.  Proposals by groups of faculty involved in teaching these courses are encouraged. Courses developed with grant support should become part of the departmental grid for information literacy skills (see the model developed for Chemistry at http://www.trincoll.edu/prog/infolit/Projects/Chemistry/default.htm).  The expectation is also that outcomes will be shared with other colleagues, both locally and in the CTW consortium.

Applications for course development grants should include:

  • The title of the course, course level, and the frequency it is taught
  • The semester when the new/revised course will be offered for the first time
  • A brief description of content and goals of the course
  • A proposal for the integration and assessment of information literacy skills
  • A plan for collaboration with library and academic computing liaisons
  • A timeline for the development of the course
  • Resources to be purchased or developed (software, tutorials, teaching tools)
  • Other anticipated expenses (student assistants, workshop or conference fees, etc.)

Applications are due on May 31, 2003 and should be addressed to Trinity’s Implementation Team for the CTW Mellon Grant (Patricia Clark, Doris Kammradt, Ann Marie Krupski).  A faculty advisory committee consisting of at least one faculty member from each discipline group will participate in the review of the applications.  Awards will be announced by June 30.  Payment of the grant money will depend on the semester the course is taught and the resource needs/timeline for its development.

Questions about the information literacy standards or the course development grants may be directed to Patricia Clark (x5212), Doris Kammradt (5352) or Ann Marie Krupski (x2181).

Thank you for considering this opportunity to define and strengthen the information literacy skills for students in your discipline.
