Identify Information Needs and
Resources
- Develops a
research topic, thesis statement or hypothesis
- Formulates
questions based on the topic or problem to be studied
- Explores general
information sources to increase familiarity with the topic
- Identifies key
terms, concepts or procedures to access information
- Identifies types
and formats of potential information sources (print, databases,
websites, data sets, audio/visual material, multimedia)
- Distinguishes
between primary and secondary sources, recognizing how they vary in
each discipline
- Recognizes the
purpose and audience of the information sources (e.g., popular vs.
scholarly, current vs. historical)
- Reviews initial
information and clarifies, revises, or refines the original topic or
thesis
- Defines a
realistic time line to acquire needed information
- Communicates
clearly and in a style appropriate for the intended audience
