You don't need to be an EMT to join TCERT. Every year we have people come to us interested in learning more about EMS, or about becoming an EMT. If you are interested, give us a call at (860) 297-2770 or e-mail us at tcert@trincoll.edu. We are more than happy to answer any of your questions.
Learn CPR!
If you are not already certified in CPR, there is no better time. All EMT's are certified for either the American Heart Association's CPR for the Health Care Provider or the American Red Cross's CPR for the Professional Rescuer. TCERT offers the CPR certification to the Trinity College community every year and will reimburse current members for re-certification costs. Many of our members have started out as Third-Responders. While they are only certified to provide CPR, it enables them to get a first-hand look at campus-based EMS, and is a great place to begin.
Become an EMT!
Becoming an EMT requires a 120-hour course and successful completion of the National Registry written and practical exam. Upon passing these exams, you will be given a card licensing you in the state or county in which you took the exam. If you take the National Registry exam, you will also be given a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) card certifying that you have passed a universal curriculum, and allowing you reciprocity in most, though not all, states. All responding members of TCERT have their Connecticut EMT license.
Hartford Hospital
offers an initial EMT training course and two refresher courses each semester. In addition, TCERT will pay for half the cost of initial training and the full cost of continuing education and re-certification for all members. For course information at Hartford Hospital, contact the Training Officer. In addition, TCERT offers yearly CPR training free of cost to the Trinity Community. In addition, we contract with the Connecticut Medical Training Academy to provide an orientation training at the beginning of every semester. While the specific curriculum changes, the training ensures that every member is providing the same basic, consistent standard of care, regardless of other EMS experience.
Compensation Package
While we are a volunteer-based organization, we do recognize that there are some members who give significantly more time than others. In an effort to reward these members, we have established a contractual bonus for those members who continually go above and beyond what is expected to keep this organization in operation. While we require an initial volunteer semester from all members, those who continue to work for the organization become eligible for payment after that first semester. For more information about the compensation package, please contact us at: tcert@trincoll.edu or at (860) 297-2770.
Note: Certain restrictions apply to the reimbursement of course costs. Please contact a TCERT officer for more information.
