What is Praxis?

   Praxis, a residentially based community service program, is Trinity’s only program hall or theme dorm. Upon entering Praxis, students make a commitment to take on an active role in one or more of the many service programs available in the Hartford community. Beyond having a big heart and a desire to help the community, Praxis members must fulfill two requirements:

   1) Every Praxis member must volunteer regularly for a chosen project throughout the academic year (though there is no minimum hour requirement). Some examples of the programs current Praxis members are involved with include Habitat for Humanity, English as a Second Language tutoring, Best Buddies, ConnPIRG, the Boys & Girls Club at Trinity College, working with the homeless at Immaculate Conception Shelter, and Adopt-a-Grandparent.

     2) As a group Praxis will do 4-5 projects each semester. These projects tend to be one-time events such as Do It Day (all campus serve-a-thon), Halloween on Vernon Street, Get Naked with Praxis Clothing Drive, and 5^th Graders go to College Day. Every Praxis member must participate in each of these projects, and is responsible for being on a planning committee for one such event during the course of the academic year.

    Praxis students take part in many diverse community outreach programs. There is a vast opportunity for leadership roles in most programs, and there are a great number of programs available. Additionally, Praxis members have the ability and support to create just about any service project they can imagine. There is a great deal of room to "think outside of the box."

    Praxis members live together in Doonesbury, which can accommodate 27 students. Doonesbury is an attractive and comfortable residence hall, located at 90-92 Vernon Street. Along with serving the Hartford community, Praxis aims to create a strong community within itself. Living in Doonesbury provides an additional opportunity for Praxis members to work together and to take on initiatives as a group. There is space for Praxis members to cook, study, be social together, and to have a lot of fun! The Praxis program provides students with a unique residential and community service experience at Trinity, and fosters active and dynamic roles for students within our campus and the larger Hartford community.
