Trinity Falls  In First Round

Brunswick, Maine - Bowdoin College goaltender Jake McCampbell made 18 saves and held visiting Trinity College scoreless for a 34-minute stretch to lead the Polar Bear men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over the Bantams in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship Tournament this afternoon.  The No. 2-seeded Polar Bears improve to 10-5 and advance to the semifinals for the third time in four seasons while the No. 7-seeded Bantams end the year with a mark of 10-6.

Things looked good in the early going for the visitors, as the Bantams received goals from Max Alderman and Rob Mountain to take a 2-0 advantage just 5:51 into the contest. Bowdoin bounced back with goals from Matt Legg and Cullen Winkler, but the Bantams closed the quarter with a pair of goals from Alderman and Kevin Looby, who found the back of the net with just a second remaining in the period to give Trinity a 4-2 lead. Legg's second goal of the game trimmed the lead to 4-3 before Adam Tracy netted a goal to deadlock the game at 4-4 for Bowdoin. Greg Brennan quickly answered with a tally for Trinity a mere nine seconds later. It would be the last lead of the game for the Bantams, with 8:02 remaining in the half, as the visitors would not score for the next 34:42 of game play.

After Steve Thomas tied the game before halftime for Bowdoin, the Polar Bears exploded for five goals in the third quarter to take a commanding lead. Five different players scored in the run, the last of which came on an outstanding individual effort by Ben Chadwick with 2:12 left in the frame to give the hosts a 10-5 lead. Rob Halliday scored with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 11-5. Trinity scored three times in the final 3:24 to close out the scoring.

McCampbell finished with 18 stops, including 10 in the fourth quarter as Trinity desperately tried to climb back into the game. Tracy led the Bowdoin scorers with two goals and two assists. Harry Ashforth had three assists on the day as Legg, Thomas, Halliday and Winkler each had two goals for Bowdoin. Looby, Brennan and Alderman had two tallies apiece for Trinity. Graham Fadden made 14 stops in net for the  closing minutes.
