RANKING IN JKA
Each rank is called a "kyu" in Japanese. There are three color belts until one attains black belt. The ranking is shown below. 9th kyu: (Beginner) No exam necessary. White belt 8th kyu: White belt 7th kyu: White belt 6th kyu: Green belt 5th kyu: Green belt 4th kyu: Green belt 3rd kyu: Brown belt 2nd kyu: Brown belt 1st kyu: Brown belt Shodan: 1st degree black belt Nidan: 2nd degree black belt Sandan: 3rd degree black belt Yondan: 4th degree black belt Godan: 5th degree black belt Up to 9th degree black belt (Awarded by executive board) 10th degree black belt: Posthumous rank given to only a handful of leaders of the organization. Requirements for Grading Grading for rank is typically done at the end of every semester. The head of UCONN Karate club will conduct the exam. Typically one is tested on executing proper technique, form, sparring, and showing enthusiasm and spirit. The specific details vary between the ranks. Contact Sensei-Chinh for more information on your specific rank grading requirements. Standardization of Shotokan Karate Upon advancing to the next rank you will be awarded a certificate. Rank earned at this club is recognized at any of the thousands of registered JKA dojos (karate clubs) across the world. You may also obtain a JKA membership card or JKA passport which you may take to any other registered dojo and be recognized by your official rank. (Fees may apply).
