A good source about the origin of karate in Okinawa: http://www.karatevid.com/article-history.htm

This site is dedicated to Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan: http://www.gichinfunakoshi.com/gichin.htm

For those on the Trinity server, or access to http://www.iconn.org, there are many articles about shotokan available, including pieces on dojos opening up in different parts of the world (like Botswana).

Gichin Funakoshi-sensei also wrote two books: Karate-do Kyohan: The Master Text (1973) and Karate-do: My Way of Life (1975). These can either be bought online, or requested through an Interlibrary Loan at your local library or university. Karate-do Kyohan is available at the University of Bridgeport and Connecticut State Public Library. Other copies of both books are available in Massachusetts and New York libraries and universities, as well as in other states.
