Shotokan karate-do is a traditional martial art from Japan. Karate seeks to promote physical fitness, discipline, character while building confidence. Self-defense techniques are taught alongside traditional training. This club is recognized by the Japan Karate Association (JKA) headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. We have close ties to the UCONN Karate Club. We attend UCONN karate competition at least once a semester. In spring 2004 the Trinity team placed 3rd in both kata (forms) and semi-free sparring at the UCONN Team Shiai (tournament). Rank (belt) grading exams are at the end of every semester. Grading is conducted by the head of the UCONN club (a 6th degree black belt).
