Minutes for Sunday, October 27, 2002
Shayla Titley’s announcements: Expose multicultural Trinity students to
multicultural prospective (preview) students. Saturday, November 9, Creative
Arts Night and afterwards party @ VSC. We are going to utilize the cultural
houses e.g. ping-pong @ the house one day. If you host you don’t have to give
them your code, they get a temporary one. The prospective students will be busy
all day so they shouldn’t be in your room the whole time. Just provide a place
to sleep. She will send us emails if you want to help out
shayla.titley@trincoll.edu
Monday, October 28 @ 7pm in the
Washington Room. Gabriela Lecture. Every year, over a quarter million women and
children are exported from the Phillipines as slaves. The problem pervades much
of Asia and other countries. Through this lecture we can find out what we can do
about this important issue.
NIGHTFIRE
PROMOTE. SPREAD THE WORD. EMAIL. CALL. IM. Like ALLISON, APPROACH PERFECT
STRANGERS (but don’t accept their candy).
“Model Minority” Discussion
Encountering stereotypes. How can me make this a more comfortable campus
environment for people of color?
Daily Jolt: a totally free speech forum? The paradox of anonymous postingsyou
can feel comfortable to say anything you want, but at the risk of
offending/hurting/slandering others. One idea: anonymity does not necessarily
hamper freedom of speech. Another: anonymity frees a person from the
consequences of what they say. Perhaps free speech should be about openness, not
anonymity. Or maybe, you should be responsible for your right to free speechyou
should be held responsible for what you say. Repressing true attitudes and
emotions does not solve the problem. Outright hate speech does not solve a
person’s conflict. Conflict mediation can be a possible solution. In campus
safety’s records, in fact, nowhere on campus are our hate crimes recorded. Some
of us feel that Trinity’s administration is overtly concerned over their image.
Sunday, November 3 at 5pm Alumni Lounge 2nd
Floor Mather MAC meeting. President Hersch will be in attendance if you
would like to express your concerns.
