Senior Class Gift - FAQ

What is the Senior Class Gift?

The Senior Class Gift is about seniors coming together to make a positive impact for their College and sustain the Trinity experience for future generations. When we make a donation, it impacts the entire Trinity community and has an immediate, tangible effect on campus. Think about the many things that contribute to your Trinity experience: the professors that inspire you, the way that studying abroad expands your horizons, the friendships that will last a lifetime, the sports teams energize all Bantams, the clubs and organizations that exercise your talents and effect change on campus, even your on-campus job… the list goes on and on. You probably wouldn’t want to choose between these things, and you don’t have to, because when you give to the Trinity College Fund you support each and every one. And your support mobilizes others to do the same.

What exactly does the Trinity College Fund (TCF) do?

The Trinity College Fund (TCF) plays a vital role in making a Trinity education possible for today’s students. 8% of the College’s operating budget comes from the TCF. Gifts to the TCF provide scholarships, create opportunities for learning and discovery, student extracurricular activities and give our talented faculty and staff the resources they need to help ensure that the student experience is an extraordinary one. As soon as it comes in, your gift can be directed to where it is needed the most, supporting Trinity students in every way.

Why is the Senior Class Gift not designated to a special project?

Based on past experience, it is difficult to find a project(s) that would both benefit the College and appeal to the entire senior class. Historically, what students do agree upon is the importance of a Trinity education and experience. For each of us, there are many different facets to our Trinity experience that have a positive and lasting impact. The Trinity Fund supports nearly all aspects of the Trinity experience. By not designating our Senior Class Gift to one specific thing, it also allows us the flexibility to make our own decisions about our philanthropy if we choose to.

But what if I want to target my money to something specific?

You can. Here’s how: 1) Make your donation to the TCF in honor of a particular professor, staff member, coach, or even a fellow student. 2) Designate your gift within the TCF by choosing one of the areas listed on the online donation page (faculty, athletics, student life [which includes financial aid], academic programs, or the library). 3. Make a restricted gift to a particular department or team. 4) Split your gift, and support the area about which you are passionate as well as the Trinity experience as a whole. Your entire gift will count toward the total Senior Class Gift.

Can you give me one good reason why I should make a Senior Gift?

Alumni participation, which is the percent of alumni who make a gift to Trinity, is one factor in the U.S. News & World Report ranking. Senior giving is included in the alumni participation category. So our Senior Gifts help increase the overall alumni participation rate, and therefore help Trinity move up in the rankings.

Why should I give back when I already pay tuition or have student loans to repay?

Because, believe it or not, tuition does not represent the true cost of a Trinity education. Tuition only covers about 75% of the cost of a Trinity education, similar to most of our peer institutions. Gifts from alumni, parents, students, and friends help offset the costs of every student who attends Trinity. All Trinity undergraduates receive a “hidden” scholarship of roughly $12,000 – the difference between the amount of money Trinity charges and the actual cost to the College. Therefore, making your Senior Gift helps insure that we can continue to offer future students the same unique educational experience that we enjoy.

What have other graduating classes done?

The Senior Class Gift is a strong Trinity tradition—for the past 12 years, Trinity seniors have achieved over 90% giving participation every year! Any gift made by a senior, from $5 to $20.18 to $100, designated to any area of the College, counts as participation for the Senior Class Gift.

How much should I give?

There is no minimum gift. We are asking each member of the Class of 2018 to participate to the extent that they are able. The recommended gift is $20.18, in honor of our class year.

Can the gift come from my parents or grandparents?

Yes. The gift can come from any source as long as the donor makes the gift in your name, so you get the credit. They can go online to

I want to join the Long Walk Societies, but I can't give $100 right now. What can I do?

You can make your gift in monthly recurring installments. Just select the Scheduled Payments option on the giving page. As a member of the Long Walk Societies you will be invited to special receptions and events held throughout the country and will be recognized in the Annual Report of Philanthropy. You will be able to network with the College’s most generous and active supporters.

What is the Loyal Bantam Club?

The Loyal Bantam Club recognizes committed donors whose annual gifts serve as the foundation for Trinity College’s growth. Gifts of every amount, to any area of the College, given by an individual for five or more consecutive fiscal years count toward Loyal Bantam participation. So for us—members of the Class of 2018—that’s in June 2023 at our 5-year College Reunion. Just check the box on the giving page to make your pledge.

What is the deadline to participate in the Senior Class Gift?

The absolute last day is May 18, which is the Friday before Commencement. But we really want to reach 90% participation by Thursday, February 8, which marks 100 days to graduation!
