Alumni and Student Athletes

harveybumpers.jpg“Being a student–athlete taught me that often a successful career is predicated on teamwork. As a member of the relay team, if you drop the baton it is extremely rare to make up lost ground. The same is true with cancer care. If any member on the team drops the ‘baton,’ usually you lose. To prevent, cure or palliate cancer you must work as a team.” ~Harvey Bumpers M.D. ’78, Director of Surgical Oncology and Breast Services, Morehouse School of Medicine

“As a freshman walk-on to the rowing team, I had no idea what an impact rowing would have on my future. The skills that I learned through rowing at Trinity, such as teamwork, perseverance, the pursuit of perfection, and learning to overcome both physical and mental challenges, led me to a bronze medal in rowing at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia and continue to guide me each day in my work as an employment litigation attorney.” ~Christine Smith Collins ’91, Partner, Bowditch & Dewey, LLP; Olympic Bronze Medalist

“My freshman year we were a young team and lost most of our games. Over the next three years we went from the basement to among the leaders in the NESCAC. Trinity baseball taught me that performing at the highest level requires intense preparation, taking chances, and visualizing oneself getting big hits. Perhaps the best experience of all was the journey as a member of a team that learned to win.”  ~Todd Dagres ’82, Co-Founder and General Partner, Spark Capital Investments

I learned to win and lose gracefully, to compete with respect for my opponent, to be a team player in all its sense. What an education!” ~Louise Kerr “Weezie” Mackey ’84, Teacher, Coach, Author (Throwing Like a Girl)

“I take pride in being part of the great tradition of Trinity Football. The coaches expect the best from their players on and off the field. They encourage us to take advantage of our Trinity education by studying abroad, working internships, reaching out to alumni, and performing community service. This past summer, thanks to support and assistance from football alumni, I had the opportunity to intern at both Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and at the Boston State House. Being a member of the football team has made my Trinity experience memorable.” ~Herman Brito ’12

“In my two years so far at Trinity, I have learned about teamwork, leadership, commitment, sacrifice, and responsibility—lessons I know will serve me in life long after my collegiate athletic career is over. I love the game more than I can explain. Many athletes here are like me in that respect. We need to run, sweat, and push ourselves to the limit, to feel the thrill of competition that no other aspect of our lives can fulfill. The heart-pounding excitement of making a big save at crunch time, the pride when a teammate makes a great play, the euphoria when your teammates collide and cheer in celebration on the field at the end of a big win, or the coach’s happy tears that come when we accomplish something amazing as a team … Those are the moments I live for, and the memories I’ll treasure most when I leave Trinity.” ~Gina Dinallo ’12

“Wrestling has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a kid it taught me how to hope and dream for something better than what I had. As I grew, wrestling continued to drive me, giving me a sense of what it meant to be dedicated, the value of hard work, and how to move past failure. Now, wrestling keeps me grounded here at Trinity. I know that no matter how hectic everything at school may be, when 4:30 p.m. rolls around I am going to walk into that room, and nothing else will matter. The only thing on my mind will be how I am going to get better that day.”  ~Greg Vaughan ’12
