College Course 135, Migrations and Diasporas- Independent Study

Prerequisite: Completion of the Special Registration Form, available in the Office of the Registrar.

Description: This half-credit course is being offered in conjunction with the project on "Migrations, Diasporic Communities and Transnational Identities" that will be held throughout the 1998-99 academic year and will comprise, among other activities, a faculty lecture series, a related film series, arts event and a possible scholarly symposium. A diverse cluster of courses, offered by a large number of faculty, is associated with this project.

Students taking one of the the linked courses, in either the fall or spring semester, may concurrently enroll in this independent study course under the supervision of the instructor in the course. Such students will be required to a) attend a sizable number of the public events sponsored by the "Migrations and Diasporas" project (the exact quantity to be specified by the supervising faculty member); b) keep a journal recording their reactions to these events; and c) write a substantial paper or compose a final project engaging issues addressed in either the faculty lecture series, the film series, the arts events, or the scholarly symposium. They will also participate in two workshops that the "Migrations and Diasporas" Steering Committee will convene at the beginning and the end of the semester in which they enroll in College Course 135. This course has been approved for repeat credit; thus interested students may register for this course both in the Fall semester 1998 and the Spring semester 1999.
