Courses

  • Wrestling with the Polyglot (core course compulsory for ALL students in ALL tracks - 1 credit)

Choose your track. Students must register for one core course specific to their chosen track and a one-credit internship.

Track 1. Documenting the Carnival Experience

  • Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (1 credit)

  • Internship - Photography, Film or Carnival Arts (1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (2 credits)

Track 2. Cultural Immersion

  • Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (recommended - 1 credit)

  • Internship - urban architecture, culture of cane-field workers, journalism, etc. Students may also suggest their own options (1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (2 credits)

Track 3. Music of the Caribbean

  • Caribbean Music (required - 1 credit)

  • Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (recommended - 1 credit)

  • Internship - Music Participation (1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (2 credits)

Track 4. Hindu Trinidad

  • Hindu Trinidad - the religion, history and culture of Hindus in Trinidad

  • Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (1 credit)

  • Internship - Photography, Film or Carnival Arts (1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (2 credits)

Track 5. Gender and Islamic Studies

  • Gender and Islamic Studies (1 credit)

  • NGO Internship -  internship with a non-governmental organisation or an institution such as the Islamic Academy(required - 1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study OR Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (2 credits)

Track 6. Caribbean Economy, Society and Culture

  • Includes:

    • Caribbean man in American and Atlantic civilization

    • Caribbean economy and business; offshore and onshore

    • Caribbean social organisation: family and community, ethnicity (race, class, colour, homeland, religion)

    • Caribbean government and politics (movements and parties, governors and governed)

    • Caribbean art and entertainment (music, dance, orature, literature, cricket, painting, carnival, steel pan, limbo, mas, stick-fighting, soca-chutney, ram-leela, etc.)

  • Internship - Trinidad and Tobago  Institute of the West Indies (1 credit)

  • Carnival Arts as Performance (recommended - 1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (1 - 2 credits)

Track 7. Ecology & Environment

  • Carnival Arts as Cultural Performance (1 credit)

  • Internship - Photography, Film or Carnival Arts (1 credit)

  • Course(s) offered by the University of the West Indies OR Independent Study (2 credits)
