- X. Temporary Agencies
- Temporary agencies do not spell out the qualifications for employment by their agencies.
Candidates are evaluated on the basis of an application and a personal interview. Specific
skills were not specified, but would vary depending upon the openings available. Office
positions usually require at least a high school diploma or a GED, and computer
proficiency which includes word processing in a Windows environment and Lotus or spread
sheet familiarity. Unfortunately, experience is important. Willingness, attitude and
interpersonal skills were also highlighted.
Most large companies have their own
in-house temporary agencies for clerical or secretarial positions. In some cases, an
employee may apply for a permanent position after three months of satisfactory service.
- XI. Training for Trades: Carpentry, Electrical, Landscaping, Painting,
Roofing, etc.
- An apprenticeship program is the preferred method for obtaining the necessary skills and
credentials for continued employment and advancement in these fields. Most programs
involve a 2-4 year commitment, but the length varies depending on the trade chosen. A
number of hours of classroom training is also often required, usually in the evenings or
on weekends. You are paid, and may receive benefits, while participating in an
apprenticeship program.
You may apply for an apprenticeship in two different ways:
- Non-union Apprenticeship Programs. For entrance into these programs, you may apply
through the Connecticut Department of Labor Job Center (see below). Once you have
completed the Apprenticeship Questionnaire and it has been processed, your name will be
placed in an applicant pool and you will be notified by mail when apprenticeship openings
occur in the trade of your choice. A sample of the Questionnaire is attached. Connecticut

- Union Apprenticeship Programs. Many unions have more formal apprenticeship programs,
following slightly different application procedures. A partial list of local union
apprenticeship coordinators, along with some general information, is included in Section
II.
Most apprenticeship programs require candidates to be at least 18 years old, and have a
high school diploma or GED. Some may require aptitude tests that rates applicants' reading
and math skills, and mechanical ability. A physical exam is usually required, which may
include drug testing, and some trades have specific physical requirements.
After meeting requirements and passing the tests, you may be asked for an interview.
You will then be given a numerical rating, based on your qualifications and the interview,
which determines your place on the waiting list for openings in the program. The amount of
time you spend on the waiting list is determined by the number of openings in the program
and your place on the list.
