Artists Collective

Two programs are available through the Artists Collective this summer:

I. Youths age 14-21 interested in the performing arts are invited to apply for a limited number of paid summer positions (25 hours per week). This program runs between July 7th and August 15th, Monday through Friday from 9AM to 4:15PM. Income guidelines apply. For information, call 527-3205.

II. Camp Culture will run from July 14th - August 15th for ages 8-18. Programs run Monday - Friday, 9AM to 4PM. Programs include dance, African percussion, music, vocal, drama, and martial arts. The cost for the camp is $400, plus a $10 membership fee. A limited number of scholarships are available. For further information and registration, call 527-3205.

 

 

Capitol Region Education Council

A summer program called EQUAL (Educational Quality through Understanding and Learning) is available at Bulkeley High School for students entering 5th through 9th grades. The program runs Monday through Friday, 9AM to 2:30PM, July 7th through August 1st. There are three different morning programs and a variety of afternoon activities. Tuition is $125 per student, and $50 for a second student in the same family. A third student in a family attends free of charge. Free transportation is provided from as close to home as possible. City of Hartford

Multipurpose Facility

Pope Park

There are a number of programs scheduled at Pope Park this summer, all of which are free and open to neighborhood children. For more information on any one of these programs, call the City of Hartford Recreational Department at 543-8876.

 

The Summer Funcation Program is for children aged 8-11 and runs 6 weeks, from July 7th to August 15th. Kids meet from Monday through Friday from 9AM to 3PM. The program includes swimming, reading, arts and crafts, cooking, field trips, and much more. Space is limited to 50 kids, so pick up your application form at the Anderson Center, Pope Park, as soon as possible.

The Youth Basketball League will run from July 7th to August 22nd. There are four different leagues; one for kids 10 and under, one for 11 and 12-year olds, one for kids 13-15, and a high school league.

 

Swimming Lessons will be given at the outdoor pool from June 23rd to August 22nd on Mondays through Fridays from 9-12AM. After that, the pool is available for open swimming from 12-8PM.

The Summer Lunch Program will take place from June 30th to August 22nd. Kids ages 18 and under will be able to receive a free meal.

 

 

Camp Courant

This is a summer camp for 2,500 Hartford children, ages 5-12. Camp begins on July 7th and closes August 21st. Camp activities include swimming, arts and crafts, woodworking, computers, sports, games, dancing, and much more. Bus transportation is available. Buses leave at 8:30AM and return between 3:30 and 4:00PM. Pick up a registration form at The Hartford Courant, 285 Broad Street. For information call 241-3795.

 

 

Hartford Neighborhood Centers

HNC operates the Hi Hoti Day Camp for children ages 5-13. Programs include remedial education, cultural performing arts, arts and crafts, computer awareness training,, dance, dramatic arts, and swimming. Fees include daily transportation to the camp. Camp program hours are 7:30AM to 3:30PM, Monday through Friday. The camp runs from July 7th to August 1st. The cost is $190 and registration fee is $10. HNC will work with each family to work out a payment schedule since fees are assessed on a sliding scale. If possible, families need to apply by June 6th. Hispanic Health Council

A summer program is available from July 7th to August 14th. The hours are 10AM to 3PM, Monday through Thursday. Activities include arts and crafts, sports, dancing, and field trips. Free transportation will be provided. For more information, call Raul Pino at 527-0856, ext. 257.

 

 

Mi Casa

A summer camp is available at the Maria Sanchez School from July 7th to August 8th for 10-17 year olds. The program operates Monday through Friday from 2PM to 8PM. Activities include art, basketball, dance, mimic, and volleyball. The deadline for applying is June 27th. For information and registration, call 522-5222.

 

 

Police Athletic League

This is a place where kids can engage in safe activities. Program activities include boxing, basketball, golf, and educational activities such as reading, tutoring, and peer involvement. In addition, the PAL runs programs such as the Explorer Program, designed to give young people with an interest in law enforcement a chance to find out more about it. There are also links to camping, summer jobs programs, and field trips. Summer hours vary, but center around daytime activities. South End Night Riders

This is a year-round program which includes tutoring, computers, trips, swimming, and basketball. Hours are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 4-9PM and Sundays from 2-7PM. For further information, call 278-6678.

 

Trinity College

Several programs are available through Trinity College this summer:

I. Trinity will host 50 middle school children from Hartford for the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program (CPEP). The program begins on June 30th and runs for five weeks to August 1st. Students are on campus from 8:30AM to 2:30PM Monday through Friday. The program includes enrichment in mathematics, science, technology, language arts, and guidance. II. Summer Camp. There are ten week-long sessions, beginning June23rd and ending August 27th. The hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30AM-5:30PM. Children are accepted from post-K through grade 5. The cost is $145 per week. Scheduled are field trips, science enrichment programs, sports, computers, swimming, as well as gardening, cooking, woodworking, and games. III. Athletic Program. This is a federally funded program for youths age 10-15. The program lasts five weeks and runs fromJune 30th - August 1st. Registration weekend is June 21st from 8AM to 4PM, and June 22nd from 8AM to noon. Youths must bring their completed application form, plus a health certificate, to the registration weekend. If students do not have health insurance, a doctor will be available at the time of registration to conduct the physical. The application form can be obtained by calling 297-2057.

 

 

YMCA

Camp Downtown runs from June30th through August 22nd for children aged 6-12. The camp meets Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Activities include aerobics classes, arts and crafts, swimming and swimming lessons, academic enrichment programs, sports, field trips, theme days, and special events. The fee is $55 per week. Splash is a swimming program for city children to teach them basic swimming skills. The classes for 6-14-year olds are from 3-5PM, Monday through Friday, beginning on June 23rd The program is free. For information, call Membership Services at 522-4183.

 

 

YWCA

The YWCA operates Camp Aya-Po for children age 5 to 13 from June 30th to August 22nd. This is a day camp at Somers, CT and runs from 9AM -4PM, Monday through Friday. Buses leave from the corner of Broad Street and Farmington Avenue at 7:38AM and return by 5:26PM. Programs include all sports, swimming, hiking, boating, archery, arts and crafts, and Native American programs. The cost per 2-week session is $235, which includes an annual membership at the YWCA.
