Peter Schmidt is deputy editor of The Chronicle of
                                        Higher Education. He has written numerous articles on
                                        affirmative action and other issues related to diversity. 
                                        Most recently he has published a stimulating piece in
                                        the Chronicle entitled What Color is an A? in which
                                        he includes a description of CHAS as part of this
                                        narrative that explores the issue of "closing the
                                        minority-achievement gap."
