All-Consortium Convocation
January 15 and 16, 2003
Trinity College, Hartford, CT

Please join us on the second floor of Mather Hall, on Summit Street.

Faculty, administrators, Consortium Representatives and those who have attended CHAS sponsored workshops throughout the past year are invited to the Third Convocation of the Consortium on High-Achievement and Success, to be held on January 15 and 16 at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.  This important gathering provides an opportunity to share ideas and learn new strategies for promoting high achievement, leadership and personal satisfaction of students on member campuses, with a focus on promoting success and satisfaction among students of color.  The meeting will convene groups of people already dedicated to the goals of institutional change and excellence among all of our students.  There is no cost to attend.

The meeting will serve three important purposes:

Ø      You will hear from faculty and administrators associated with projects proven to promote the highest levels of student motivation and accomplishment. Listen to:

Robert Yuan (Professor of Microbiology at the University of Maryland, College Park) who will discuss his pedagogy of science instruction in the global context, “Journey Without Maps” which also promotes cooperative learning with students from different social and cultural background.

Jose Moreno (Researcher for Campus Diversity Initiative Evaluation Resource Project) who will discuss developing appropriate research methods and database for conducting campus based assessment for institutional change.

Earnestine Baker (Executive Director of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program) who will talk about the logistics and components of a program with a 95% success rate in placing students of color in graduate and professional programs in the sciences.

Richard McCray (Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Chair of the National Research Council committee on undergraduate science education) who will talk about techniques for transforming science courses from teacher-centered to student-centered to promote active student learning and enhance motivation.

Ø      Leaders of CHAS working groups will lead discussions about projects underway and you will learn how your institution can benefit.  Learn about:

Assessment Project: will develop a shared, confidential data base from all CHAS institutions and provide to the Consortium the first broadly based study of the curricular and co-curricular experiences of students of color and white cohorts at our private, selective liberal arts institutions

Black and Latino Males Project: develops the vehicles and resources that assist often isolated groups of students in connecting to the college community, developing leadership skills, and having a sense of ownership over their college experience

Barrier Course Project: turning traditionally challenging entry-level courses, usually in math and sciences, into gateways for the exploration of these disciplines as majors and towards career development, while helping faculty serve as excellent mentors and motivators of all students

Promoting Excellence Project: will develop a cross-institutional program to promote the highest levels of achievement among students of color interested in quantitative disciplines.  Beginning with aggressive recruitment and a summer bridge experience, the program will focus on mentorship, career advisement, graduate school preparation and creating networks of professional and peer support

Ø      You will have an opportunity to meet with colleagues who work in similar areas across CHAS
institutions, to share ideas and perhaps develop collaborative projects.  Currently, we expect meetings
of those working in career services, counseling offices, athletics, religious life programs, academic
support programs, admissions and financial aid, and support personnel, but other groups of
professionals can arrange to meet together as well.

The meeting will be preceded by a Supplemental Instruction Supervisor Training on January 13-15.
