Support Services as Supportive Services

Hosted by Bryn Mawr College on October 31-November 1, 2002

Meeting Summary:

Organized by Bates and Washington and Lee representatives, the CHAS workshop for Support Staff held at Bryn Mawr College on November 1, 2002 was very successful.  There were more attendees than originally anticipated.  Participants were from Barnard, Bates, Bryn Mawr, Dartmouth, Haverford, Swarthmore, Trinity, and Washington & Lee Colleges.

We began the event with a very nice reception at Bryn Mawr College, which helped to bring strangers together breaking the ice for the workshop for the next day.  The workshop consisted of a panel of two support staffers from Bates College and Washington & Lee College who talked about how they empowered themselves to be a leader and role models for their peers.  This panel generated many questions and much discussion about how important it is to be empowered yourself so you can help others.  The participation from those present was outstanding.

There was a luncheon with a speaker who had been a staff person for a private school and an Executive Assistant for a corporation before retiring.  She further promoted the idea of how important it is to be empowered so you can assist others, and how her work with the students not only benefited them but her as well.

It was important that the group heard success stories and ideas from people who are sharing the same kinds of work experiences rather than administrators and faculty.  This really helped to motivate the discussion.

Everyone expressed an interest in doing this again so that others from their institutions can benefit from such a workshop.  Dartmouth College is planning to do such a workshop on their own campus.  They also shared their program for retaining Native American Indian students.

All said, this was a very successful workshop and a wonderful day for all.  Attached is an Action Plan developed by the group to be used at their institutions to help them towards meeting their College's commitment to diversity.
