On every college campus, there are courses that pose seemingly impenetrable challenges to students and, often, disproportionately to students of color.  Usually the courses are entry-level natural science, math, or social science courses where the level of difficulty discourages students from taking further coursework in the discipline and in other ways drains their motivation.  These challenging courses particularly affect students who, for a variety of reasons, question their abilities to succeed in a selective college environment.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an effective academic support model that increases student achievement and persistence.  An SI leader, a student who has excelled in a course, attends all course lectures and conducts small collaborative learning groups to guide students in mastering course content and effective learning strategies.  An SI Supervisor hires, trains, and supervises SI leaders and evaluates the program every semester.  SI is a technique that transforms courses often seen as barriers into gateways to success, allowing students to achieve excellence in the course and encouraging them to pursue further courses in the discipline.  The technique has proved highly successful on several Consortium campuses (click on the links below for reports).

The SI Supervisor Training is two and a half days and covers the following: the theoretical framework for SI; process activities for conducting SI sessions in different disciplines; procedures for conducting 2-Day SI Leader Orientations and weekly inservice trainings; methods for evaluating program effectiveness; and responsibilities of SI leaders, faculty, and SI Supervisors.  Research documenting the efficacy of SI, an SI Supervisor Manual, and an SI Leader Manual is provided for participants.  An optional three-hour SI research workshop is offered following the SI Supervisor Training.  The research workshop covers the following: Selecting appropriate theoretical frameworks to embrace research questions; methods for collecting, storing, and analyzing data; and interpreting results.
