3rd Annual CHAS
Student
Conference Promoting a Diverse Social and Cultural Life on Campus November 17-19, 2006
Barnard College A highly interactive leadership training experience, this conference will bring together diverse student teams and administrators and faculty from various CHAS campuses. Targeting students holding leadership positions in organizations such as SGA, cultural organizations, fraternities and sororities and community service organizations, this is an opportunity for students to consider their role in promoting an inclusive atmosphere on their campus, working across lines of race and ethnicity to develop skills in promoting positive changes in the campus climate. Students will hear from experienced speakers, have opportunities to explore their own perspectives on and experiences with inclusive diversity, and develop an action plan that builds on the skills development and team building experiences of the two days. Student teams will share this action plan for promoting a diverse social and cultural life with the college/university president upon their return. To encourage participation and active involvement in this exciting conference, invitations can be sent from your college/university president or dean, expressing confidence in the student's abilities as a campus leader to have an impact. The conference organizers have drafted a letter that can be mailed in August to prompt registration in September. Student teams will meet with their president upon their return to share their action plan. We invite you to be a part of this conference by organizing a team of up to eight representatives that should include: 1) a diverse group of five students holding leadership positions in a variety of student organizations, such as SGA, Sororities and Fraternities, cultural organizations and community service organizations 2) two administrators with an interest in promoting student initiatives that impact upon campus climate 3) one faculty member interested in the link between campus and classroom climate It is ideal to invite a majority of sophomores, and some juniors if necessary. Seniors will not have an opportunity to implement programs and pass on information and strategies to underclassmen in later years. As contact person you can also act as liaison to your president, inviting his or her involvement through issuing an invitation, and arranging a meeting of the team with the president or chief academic officer in November. The registration fee for a team of 8 representatives is $250 and includes all materials, meals and coffee breaks (this fee is non-refundable). A grant from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation will subsidize speakers and lodging for each member of your team (up to seven people), but you will be responsible for making your own travel arrangements and covering the expenses to and from Barnard College, and lodging for any additional team members. Please contact Kidan Kassahun, Coordinator of CHAS at 860-297-4173 or kidan.kassahun@trincoll.edu, with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
