Intensive three-week course in art conservation

May 31–June 20, 2008

Sistine Chapel
Still haven’t done your science requirement? Do it this summer in Rome, at a special intensive 3-week program at Trinity's Rome Campus!

An engaging introduction to art conservation in the heart of Ancient, Renaissance, and Baroque civilizations, with a focus on Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes. The course will feature visits to museums, monuments, and conservation laboratories.

Science in Art (CHEM 150)

This course will focus on topics of interest to artists from the perspective of our scientific understanding of the materials comprising their work. Emphasis will be placed on the need for conservation and preservation of art objects, in particular fresco and easel paintings, ceramic and metallic sculpture, jewelry, and cloth. Dating techniques will be covered as they assist with provenance and authentication studies. Topics of special interest to particular students may be presented, as well as a discussion of several masters whose interest in art and science overlap to a considerable degree.

Note: In order to prepare students optimally for the fieldwork opportunities in Rome, Professor DePhillips will give four pre-departure lectures in April—dates and times to be announced. Trinity students who plan to take the course in Rome are required to attend the lectures. Students from other colleges will be required to view digital clips of the lectures and other preparatory materials online at the course Web site. All students must complete short assignments from these materials before departure. Satisfactory completion of all assignments is a prerequisite for attendance in Rome.

This course satisfies the Distribution Requirement in Natural Sciences at Trinity.

Enrollment is limited to 14 students.
