The Academy is one of the most prestigious academic institutions not only of Italy, but in the world. It is divided in two classes: one comprising Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences; the other Moral, Historical and Philogical Sciences. The Accademia dei Lincei still pursues nowadays its mission promoting, coordinating, integrating and spreading scientific knowledge in its highest expression, in the unity and universality of culture. Back in 1603 Federico Cesi and three other young men drew up a document about the pursuit of science. They shared a fervent love for it further increased by the renown of Galileo’s lectures and experiments. They were animated by a great desire of seeing  into the secrets of nature with a perception as acute as that of a lynx. Hence the name of Lyncei to their association. Despite the long periods of difficulties and separation that characterized the history of this important institution, the founders and their successors managed to carry out their original program by devoting their activities to the natural sciences, with the express aim of discovering the essence of things, without implying the exclusion of the arts and philosophy.

The site consists of 20 rooms disposed on various levels showing traces of frescoes dating back to the III-IV centuries A.D. as well as to the medieval period. It is a complex of residential edifices from the imperial time to which belong a characteristic lower class housing, insula, and a domus (single-family home) with a private bathing system. During the III century A.D., these two features came to form one elegant domus inside which originated a place of worship and, afterwards, the christian titulus.

The Cooperativa Sociale Spazio Libero organizes tours of this site that alternate the guiding done by expert archeologists with the declamation by an actor of verses from latin poets such as Martial, Juvenal and Propertius and the tasting of dishes prepared according to ancient recipes going back to the imperial period.
