Bernini (ROME 342) - Seminar
(Old Masters series)

Semester TBA. The life and works of Bernini sculptor, painter, and architect in historical context. Works include Apollo and Daphne, the Baldacchino, David, Triton Fountain, Ecstasy of St. Theresa, Fountain of the Four Rivers, the elicoidal staircase in Palazzo Barberini, self-portraits, and the piazza and colonnades at St. Peter’s. Topics include stone and flesh, torque and equilibrium, division of labor in design and execution, the Baroque style, intimacy and monumentality, integration of elements and setting, and technique and light. The academic excursion to Florence is an integral part of the course. The focus on Bernini is supplemented by contextual survey elements. The seminar component consists of reports and presentations in class on topics chosen in consultation with the instructor. Prerequisite: a course in art history.

Enrollment is limited to 15 students.
