Caravaggio (ROME 341) - Seminar
(Old Masters Series)
Semester TBA. The life and works of Caravaggio in historical context.
Paintings include Young Sick Bacchus, Boy with a Basket of Fruit,
Fortune Teller, Bacchus, Judith and Holophernes, Narcissus,
Conversion of St. Paul on the Road to Damascus,
John the Baptist, and David with the Head of Goliath.
Topics include Rome, Naples, and Sicily, crime and genius,
the creation of the Baroque style, and technique and light.
The academic excursions to Florence and Naples are integral parts of the course.
The focus on Caravaggio is supplemented by contextual survey elements.
The seminar component consists of reports
and presentations on topics chosen in consultation with the instructor.
Prerequisite: a course in art history.Enrollment is limited to 15 students.
