FIRST TWO ROUNDS
COMPLETE IN
INDIVIDUAL SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Hartford, Conn. – Both the Trinity men’s and women’s squash teams had three individuals advance to the quaterfinals in the A Flight brackets of the Intercollegiate Squash Championships.
For the women, the defending champion and top seeded Amina Helal (Manchester, England), coasted through round one, then defeated fellow Trinity captain Clare Austin (Banbury, England) 9-1, 9-5, 9-1, in the second round. Austin had won a hard fought battle in the previous round. Pam Saunders (Harare, Zimbabwae) won both her matches in three games while advancing to the quarterfinals. Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia), the third seed, also advanced in a similar fashion.
On the men’s side, returning champion and second seeded Bernardo Samper (Bogota, Colombia), won his first round match, and defeated teammate Nadeem Osman (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) 9-1, 10-8, 9-0 to reach the quarters. Michael Ferreira (Stamford, England), the five seed, made his way to the quarters in impressive fashion, winning both his matches easily and in straight sets. Joining them in the quarterfinals will be eleventh seeded Nick Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda), who upset the number 6 seed in the second round 9-6, 3-9, 9-5, 9-7 to advance.
Play resumes tomorrow morning at Trinity College, with the championship round taking place Sunday.
